All jewellery has an environmental impact. Whether it is made from mined metals, farmed pearls, or recycled materials, every piece requires resources, energy, and transportation. At Rabbit Forest Jewellery, we believe it is important to acknowledge this reality rather than present an idealised version of our practices.

We are not a zero-impact brand. However, we are committed to understanding our footprint and taking practical steps to reduce it where we can.

The Real Environmental Costs

Jewellery production carries several environmental considerations. Mining for precious metals can affect ecosystems and water quality. Pearl farming, while generally lower impact than mining, still requires careful management of water resources and waste. Transportation across continents adds to carbon emissions, and packaging materials contribute to waste if not chosen thoughtfully.

These impacts are not unique to our brand — they exist across the jewellery industry. What matters is how seriously a brand acknowledges them and what it chooses to do in response.

How We Try to Reduce Our Impact

We focus on a few practical areas where we believe we can make a meaningful difference:

Choosing 18K Gold Vermeil
By working with 18K gold vermeil rather than solid gold, we reduce the amount of newly mined gold required. The sterling silver base is a precious metal that can be recycled, and the thicker gold layer offers better longevity than thin plating, which helps reduce the need for replacement pieces over time.

Working with Long-Term Partners
We maintain long-standing relationships with our pearl suppliers in China and Japan. These partnerships allow us to work with farms that prioritise water quality and responsible practices. Stable relationships also reduce the environmental cost of constantly changing suppliers and shipping materials across new routes.

Designing for Longevity
One of the most effective ways to reduce environmental impact is to create jewellery that lasts. We focus on strong nacre layers in our pearls, secure settings, and quality gold vermeil that ages gracefully. Pieces that remain beautiful and wearable for many years reduce the need for new purchases.

Thoughtful Packaging
We use minimal packaging designed to protect the jewellery during shipping while avoiding unnecessary waste. We continue to explore options for more sustainable packaging materials as they become available.

What We Are Still Working On

We do not have all the answers. We are still exploring ways to further reduce transportation emissions, improve packaging circularity, and better understand the full lifecycle impact of our materials. We also recognise that small brands like ours have limited influence over large-scale mining and farming practices.

What we can do is remain honest about our current position and continue making incremental improvements as better options become available.

Sustainability in jewellery is not about perfection. It is about making better choices where we can, and being honest about the impact that remains.
